The Little Red Owl

DIY ideas for home, health, & life

It is Sweetest Day. Husband and I do NOT celebrate this holiday-I mean, that’s what Valentine’s Day is for right? Also, I’m super cheap.

I decided to find out a little more about the origins of Sweetest Day so you guys will benefit. Here is what I learned:

1. The very first Sweetest Day was October 8, 1921 in  Cleveland Ohio (my home state).

2. That first Sweetest Day was planned by a committee of 12 confectioners chaired by candymaker C. C. Hartzell.

3. The Sweetest Day in the Year Committee distributed over 20,000 boxes of candy and they also distributed candy on behalf of a few of the biggest movie stars of the day.

4. Only eleven states and parts of two states celebrate Sweetest Day: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas,Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and areas of both New York and Pennsylvania.

So it appears this “holiday” originated as a way to get fun sweet treats people-NOT as a lovey-dovey holiday. Don’t we have Halloween for that?

Do you do something special for Sweetest Day?
